Yorkshire Close Up Magician at Crathorne
I work as a Yorkshire Close Up Magician several times a year. On this occasion I drove up to a hotel just above Harrogate.
The Crathorne Hall Hotel was initially built in 1906 near the village of Yarm. The Dugdale family owned the estate until the mid-1970s. In its time, it has played host to royalty and politicians. It has now been turned into a hotel with thirty-seven bedrooms, two Rosette restaurants and fifteen acres of private grounds.
Indeed four million pounds has recently gone into refurbishing and restoring the East Wing.
It is used for conferences, weddings and private parties throughout the year. On this occasion, it was booked by ABB Group, a vast technology company with offices in the north. Laughlines were providing the entertainment for the staggering thirteenth year in a row.
Laughlines are famous for providing Comedy Dinner Shows up and down the country. They are also planning a game show format which they will tour around the country later in the year. After twelve years of different shows, ABB decided to go for something different this year, which is where I came in.
I was asked to perform close up magic during the reception and a cabaret performance between the main course and dessert. This can be an excellent format. The guests get to know you during the informal part of the evening and are more responsive when it comes to the cabaret later.
The evening was very well organised, with each part of the itinerary running almost to the minute—special thanks to Andy and Sue, who were such great characters on stage.
I often work as a Yorkshire Close Up Magician with appearances at the York Museum, Wentbridge House and Humberside Fire and Rescue Award Ceremony. I have also lectured for the Hull Magicians.
